Our Minister

A Short History of Our Minister
I was born in Moncton, New Brunswick, the oldest of four children. I attended Wesley Memorial United Church
familyin Moncton, where I met my husband-to-be, Ross Dickson, in the nursery at church. We were both active youth in the church until we headed off to Dalhousie University, where we both earned Bachelor's Degrees in Science, and I earned a B.Ed. I also studied voice with Karen Kierstead Mills, and sang my recitals in the sanctuary at Fairview United Church. Ross went to Kingston, ON to do graduate work at Queen's University, and I followed him there after our marriage in 1987. While I was there, I experienced a call to ministry. I entered theological college at Queen's, graduating in 1996, which was also the year our first daughter, Shannon, was born. After stops in Calgary and Waterloo,ON, in December 1997 I was ordained by Maritime Conference, and I took up ministry in a two-point rural pastoral charge in Enterprise and Roblin, ON, about forty-five minutes from Kingston. We were there for nine and a half years. Daughter Alison came along in 1998 and son Matthew in 2002. Our family returned to Halifax in the summer of 2007, when Ross was offered a staff position in the Computing Services department at Dalhousie. We are enjoying being closer to family, and discovering how the city has changed in the twenty years we were away. I enjoy music, sewing, smocking, quilting, baking gourmet desserts, losing herself in a good book, especially science fiction or fantasy -- we all enjoyed the release of the last Harry Potter book this summer -- and studying medieval history, an age I have loved since I first read about the adventures of Robin Hood in grade school. I enjoy leading worship, whether we're rocking the house with drums and electric guitar, or a contemplative prayer service with a water ritual, or giving over centre stage to the youth as they lead us in a drama. I am very interested in deeper study of the Bible, experiencing God's presence in a spiritual, relational way, and in exploring the future of the church as we move into the 21st century. I think those of us in the church in this time of change have a unique opportunity to set the course for where God's people will be going next, and the more open we can stay to the call of God's Spirit and the leading of Jesus' teachings, the more true our course will be. I hope that you will be a part of our fellowship, and I would love to explore with you where your spiritual calling is taking you.
